Neuropsychological Evaluation
Families seek neuropsychological evaluation for various reasons. Some parents have developmental or educational concerns, or may feel as though “something is not quite right” about their child’s progress academically, socially, or emotionally. Some families may need diagnostic clarification in order to obtain treatment recommendations. Others may seek information as to how their child is progressing since a diagnosis was made, or after receiving educational services. Other families may be struggling to develop adequate educational or treatment services to best meet the needs of their child.
Neuropsychological evaluation begins with a parent intake, where the clinician reviews the background history of the child, parent concerns, medical and educational documentation, previous evaluations, and current therapeutic and educational services. After the intake, the clinician develops a plan for assessment that will evaluate all aspects of the child’s neuropsychological functioning.
It is very important for the child to feel comfortable during the testing process. While many children enjoy various aspects of cognitive assessment, like putting together puzzle pieces and answering questions, these tasks can be straining for children with attention, learning, or emotional challenges. Therefore, it is important to create a flexible assessment setting that moves at the child’s pace and comfort level. Some children do well in one day long assessment and others need many sessions and emotionally attuned support to remain engaged.
Parent Consultation
When the evaluation is complete, parents come back to the office for a feedback session. The clinician integrates data from the child’s developmental and educational history, input from caregivers, teachers and therapists, behavioral observations during testing, and assessment results. The feedback includes a thorough discussion of the child’s current functioning in domains of intellectual and educational status, language ability, attention, executive functioning, social pragmatic skills, emotional status, and psychological functioning.
Most importantly, a clear road map for improving the presenting concerns is laid out. This road map may include what parents can do at home, what accommodations and services are appropriate at school, and what other professionals/ treatments need to be brought in for the child to be successful.
A written neuropsychological evaluation report follows this feedback, and can be used by parents, educators, and other professionals to inform ongoing educational and therapeutic planning.
